The fantasy history of Blockshire

and the family that lives here.

A project like this doesn’t come alive without a story. It is a lot of fun to imagine a family living here for many generations. Each playing their part in the history. We will keep following the family on their journey in future houses.

The original castle was build in the 11th century as a stronghold for the region. It was home to kings and queens before it changed hands in 1654. The castle was in disrepair and that is why the decision to sell it, was made. The Earl of Blockshire saw potential and bought the castle. After the restoration the family moved in and lived there ever since.

From 1715 to 1716 the castle served as a royal military headquarters during the civil war. To show gratitude, the reinstated king George created the dukedom of Blockshire.

The 6th Duke of Blockshire started extensive alterations at colossal cost. The dukes taste changed over the years. In his younger years he preferred the Palladian style but came to like more of the gothic styles as he aged. Some of the exteriors were restyled by adding new battlements and turrets. Inside, conservation works commenced and several new rooms were created like the ballroom and the guardroom. The great hall was completely renovated and keeps its appearance to this day. After the death of the 6th Duke, work on the castle stopped.

The 7th Duke of Blockshire was wealthy beyond measure and had a grand idea about the estate.  He envisioned a castle with no compare. He preferred a blend of styles and applied this taste to Blockshire Castle. The exterior was remodeled to its current appearance. A statue of the former king was removed from the courtyard. He wanted no mentioning of a former royal residence but to express the wealth and status of his family. He completed the works and spend an astronomical sum on the castle. He died 5 years later.
